Pitoresco Festival commissioned us to paint a mural with the local popular saying “Behind Marão mountain, those who are here rule”
The population of Trás os Montes (northern Portuguese region that is "behind the mountains") lived isolated for centuries, with the Marão mountain (recently crossed by a tunnel) being one of the main factors of isolation, due to being difficult to cross. From this isolation, a feeling of self-identity and independence from the rest of the country was born, which gave rise to this popular saying.
