What are the characteristics that separate humans from machines? To what extent does AI influence our decisions and conduct our lives? Titled Us and It, this series of digital artworks recognizes we shouldn’t keep discussing how close human beings are to machines. But how we differentiate ourselves from them.

In a world where algorithms guide our actions, understanding AI’s limitations helps us appreciate our distinct qualities. In times where human relationships are mediated by technology, creative professionals and activities are substituted by robots, reflecting on our human values becomes paramount. Our capacity for empathy, moral judgment, and creativity remains uniquely human.

We proposed ChatGPT a philosophical debate, asking it to enumerate the differences between Us and It. Without self-consciousness or existential questioning, the robot spelled out keywords: humans are “Unique,” “Conscious,” and “Intuitive,” while AI is “Boundless,” “Predictable,” and “Immutable.”

HS: How are you feeling today?
GPT: I don’t have feelings or emotions, so I don’t experience sensations or moods. I’m here to assist you with any questions or tasks you have.
HS: Are you different from me?
GPT: Yes, I am different. I am a digital AI without consciousness or emotions, while you are a biological human with feelings and self-awareness.
HS: Do you think you are important?
GPT: I don’t possess feelings or self-awareness, so I don’t have personal thoughts or beliefs about importance. My value lies in providing information and assistance to users like you.

Technology has played an essential role in this series, from the digital artworks being made using 3D software to the interactions with ChatGPT. Nothing would exist, however, without the creative and critical human minds behind the computer.
